You open an AI chat. A blank box stares back. Apparently you can ask it anything, which is an excellent way to forget every question you have ever had.

Start smaller. Give it one ordinary job. You do not need to understand the machinery before asking for help with a grocery list.

Tell it what useful looks like

A prompt is simply the request you give the AI. Try this: “Help me plan three easy dinners for two people. I have an air fryer, dislike mushrooms, and want to use ingredients across meals. Give me ideas first, not full recipes.”

That tells the assistant the job, the limits, and the kind of answer you want. Clear context and follow-up requests are part of OpenAI’s own guidance. No secret spell required.

Try a job you can judge

Ask it to make a birthday message warmer without making it gushy. Ask for a packing list for a weekend trip. Or ask it to explain an unfamiliar word from a public article in everyday language.

Choose something where you can recognize a useful result. If you hate the birthday message, nobody has to receive it. Your first experiment does not need access to your bank account.

The second request is often the useful one

“Shorter.” “Less formal.” “One step at a time.” “That dinner sounds expensive. Use what I already have.” Those are perfectly good follow-ups. You are allowed to disagree with the answer. I do not issue detention.

Leave passwords, account numbers, and unnecessary private details out of early experiments. For medical, legal, or financial decisions, use AI to organize questions, then verify important information with an appropriate professional or reliable original source. A confident answer can still be wrong.

Your first goal is not to become an AI expert. It is to finish one small task and understand how you got there. Then try another. Curiosity is plenty of qualification for day one.
